How To Change the Name of your iPhone

Has your iPhone been gifted with a personal name? If you’re as lucky as I am, it might already be something distinctive like “David’s iPhone” or ‘Dan’s iPhone”.

However, there is a pitfall to the generic name “iPhone.” For example let’s say you are looking for your iPhone on Find My iPhone and your phone is named other than “iPhone,” or perhaps one of a few iPhones that belong to your family. Then it becomes difficult to distinguish these apples from other apples.

There are many reasons why people choose to tweak their names. Perhaps you’re wanting a name that includes your name, like “Dan’s iPhone,” maybe you want privacy by not including your name at all in the title, or perhaps you just want a nickname for your phone name that’s meaningful only to you.

There are many reasons why you might want to rename a device. Perhaps you prefer a name that’s easier to remember or that just happens to have more of an impact, but whatever it may be, Apple allows you to change any device’s nickname as much as you’d like in the corresponding settings.

When you change the name of your device, you will immediately see the new name on iCloud. There won’t be any confusion as to why an app or another device is looking for the old name and there are no limits as to how many times you can change the device’s name.

Apple offers the incentive of owning a number of its devices. Apple devices are designed to make products that inspire customers to say ‘it just works and they are best experienced when utilizing across Apple’s range of devices – So when you own an iPhone, pairing switches over automatically on iCloud if you take out your AirPods and begin using it with Mac or vice versa. AirDrop is a super-fast way to wirelessly transfer photos, videos, and files between two iPhones with one tap. Apple devices work best when used with other Apple devices. Sometimes, it’s difficult to find the right words to properly convey an idea or concept accurately, so why not let them do the talking for you?

When using some features in Continuity, such as AirDrop, an iPhone’s name will appear on the list. Depending on the user’s name, Apple will automatically refer to it by either their first or last name followed by the product type. (“John”‘s iPhone” or “Jane’s iPad”, for example). While this may not be a problem for users whose names are uncommon (and therefore their devices should stand out more), it could cause confusion if two Apple devices had similar names and were in close proximity to one another. Changing an iPhone’s name prevents that issue.

Here is how to change the name of your iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap “General” and then tap “About”
  3. Tap “Name”
  4. On the Name page, rename your device name.

These are the 4 simple steps you need to take to change the name of your iPhone.
