The switch has generated a lot of buzz and, more importantly, has sold a record 55 million copies. This has made many gamers start to appreciate the handheld console, and even many non-gamers have started to buy this handheld gaming machine.

The Switch has a great screen for mobile devices, as well as a customizable wireless joystick. It also has an extensive game library, including many exclusive AAA games. But when you’re at home, you can use the dock to connect your Switch to your TV or monitor and seamlessly enjoy gaming on the big screen. But then again, many of us may not have a TV or monitor, for a larger screen, we may just have a laptop. So can we connect Nintendo Switch to a computer?

Display Switcher on Laptop with HDMI Input Port

If you want to display your Switch on your laptop, you’ll need an HDMI input port on your computer. Unfortunately, only some laptops have an HDMI input port. Don’t confuse your laptop’s HDMI port with HDMI, it’s probably an output port.

Why do we say so? Because most laptops do not have an input port. If you did, you probably know. In fact, only 0.01% of laptops have HDMI functionality.

As of now, only Alienware series laptops have HDMI input ports. You might be under the impression that the HDMI output port works in a similar way; however, attempting to display your Switch on your laptop via the HDMI output will not work.

An example of this is when you take an HDMI cable and connect it to HDMI on your laptop and to HDMI on your TV. The computer screen is then presented on your television screen. However, all TVs have an HDMI input port by default, so laptops aren’t built with just that functionality in mind.

You don’t have to worry though! Although a built-in HDMI input port is very rare, you can connect your console to your laptop with a game capture card.

What you need to connect your Nintendo Switch to your computer

To watch Nintendo Switch games on a laptop, you’ll need to purchase an HDMI video capture card. This is necessary because computer models typically do not support the HDMI IN function.

You may remember using an HDMI connection to mirror your computer screen to a monitor or TV screen. This is an HDMI output port that cannot be used to import other media to your computer display.

Any capture card can be used for this process as long as it has a USB-C connection and an HDMI input port. There are many great capture cards to choose from, but players generally find the Elgato card to be the best option due to its affordability, build quality, and ease of use.

For these instructions, we are using the Elgato HD60 HDMI Capture Card and the free Elgato Game Capture HD software. Capture cards can be purchased from Amazon, while the software can be downloaded free from the official Elgato website.

If you’re using a different capture card to connect your Switch to your computer, the steps should be more or less the same. Likewise, most game capture software does the same thing, so if you have another program you prefer to use, you can use that instead of Game Capture HD.

After clicking and confirming ‘Add Bluetooth device’, your Nintendo controller should appear in the resulting list. Make sure the lights are still flashing and click on your controller from the list to make the connection.

Note for Mac Users

If you’re more Mac-oriented, you’ll need additional software, as appears from 1997. There is an official Android file transfer app that you can download from the Android website, and it works and will let you view and download. Everything It’s old screenshots and videos, it doesn’t provide any preview so it’s very hard to tell. What file is this actually?

In this example, we’re using the free version of the app called MacDroid, which allows you to view files on your Switch using the native macOS Finder system. It’s unofficial so download and use it at your own risk, but we didn’t have any problems and found it much easier than the official alternative.
